Science that makes it into practice
Earthquake engineering and structural dynamics at international research level – rooted in university partnerships, peer-reviewed publications and our own software development.
CSI Austria-Germany combines the distribution and further development of CSI software with its own research. Our team has been active in academic and applied research for more than a decade – with a doctorate from the University of Innsbruck, a research stay in the USA and long-standing collaborations with universities in Austria, Germany and abroad. We bring new findings directly into tools and verification methods for engineering practice.
20+ peer-reviewed publications · 10 journal articles · 6 co-organized conferences, special sessions and minisymposia
Research focus

Nonstructural components and floor accelerations
During earthquakes, building services, facades and equipment are loaded by the accelerations of the floors they are attached to. We have developed a response spectrum method for peak floor acceleration demands and, together with the University of Innsbruck, are implementing it in a SAP2000 plugin – compared against Eurocode 8 (first and second generation), ASCE/SEI 7-22 and response history analysis.

Seismic fragility and reliability-based assessment
• Steel racking systems: ductile bracing concepts with seismic links according to FprEN 1998-1-1 – pushover, incremental dynamic analysis and testing, together with industry
• Historical masonry: collapse fragility curves and simplified reliability-based verification of Viennese Gründerzeit buildings
• Ground motion record selection based on multi-objective optimization

Soil-structure interaction
Three-dimensional finite element models including the subsoil show when it pays off to account for inertial and kinematic interaction in seismic verification – for example for existing buildings with basements. For practice, we develop absorbing boundary conditions and efficient substitute models in SAP2000.
Structural dynamics and ground-borne vibration
• Timber construction for vibration-sensitive use: cross-laminated timber floors in laboratory buildings according to VDI 2038 (VC curves)
• Elastic base isolation of buildings against low-frequency vibration from rail traffic
• Railway dynamics: load models for track design, vehicle-track-soil simulation and structure-borne noise of bridges

BridgeExpert – dynamic analysis of railway bridges: hours instead of weeks – with scientific precision
In-house software development: BridgeExpert is a plugin for SAP2000 and CSiBridge for the dynamic calculation of railway bridges under train crossings – including acceleration verification according to EN 1990 Annex A2 for high-speed rail. All trains, all speeds, all nodes in one pass.
• Large bridge, entire deck slab: 5687 nodes, HSLM-A1 to A10, 40–250 km/h (430 combinations) in 3.4 hours instead of weeks to months with off-the-shelf software – at least 100 to 400 times faster (same hardware, 7 cores)
• Shell model with 80,596 equations and 1001 modes up to 30 Hz
• < 0.3% deviation compared to SAP2000 and CSiBridge (natural frequencies, deflection, time history)
• Import trains via Excel (e.g. HSLM-A/B), spectra, contour display and statistics directly in the plugin

Figure: Performance of BridgeExpert on a large bridge – demo model inspired by the Main Valley Bridge (1262 m, arch span 162 m, shell model with 80,596 equations, 1001 modes up to 30 Hz). Bottom: maximum over HSLM-A1 to A10 and 40–250 km/h (maximum line speed) per node of the deck slab, normalized to 3.5 m/s²; exceedance in violet. Note: the model was built from data gathered through internet research and serves solely to demonstrate the performance of the plugin. A precise assessment of this structure would require the actual design drawings.
